What is the Labyrinth?

The labyrinth is an archetype that shows up throughout the ages in many cultures. Unlike a maze, a labyrinth has only one path to the center. That same path is then followed back out again. There are no tricks to a labyrinth.

In Christian tradition, the labyrinth is often laid out to contain a cross. We use the labyrinth as a tool of prayer.

How do I walk the labyrinth?

- Be mindful of God’s presence with you

- Walk on the dirt between the bricks lining the path

- Pass other people if you need to, or pause at the turns to let others pass you

- Stay in the center for a time if you wish

You may wish to do one of these while walking:

- Quiet your mind; be present with your breathing and your steps.

- Be open to the metaphors that come to you.

- Repeat a short prayer such as “Lord Jesus Christ” or “Come Holy Spirit.”

- Actively talk with God about a concern or intention; both speak and listen
